But introducing the cars to the U.S. market isn’t as simple as changing the speedometer from kilometers to miles. Ford has to reconcile American and European safety regulations — everything from the color of rear turn signals to the positioning of crash test dummies — that will keep the cars from hitting U.S. highways anytime soon.

Competing interests among automakers, governments and the insurance industry are hampering efforts to standardize safety requirements worldwide. That means extra engineering to make different versions of vehicles for different markets.

“Each party negotiating this has their own views about their own standards being better,” said Ronald Medford, senior associate administrator of vehicle safety at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which sets U.S. standards. “But as long as we can show we’re not lowering safety and we’re lowering cost, we’re all interested in that.”

Some differences are significant, like the U.S. rule that requires protection for passengers not wearing seat belts, which has no European equivalent. Others are small, like the U.S. requirement that vehicles have side lights, which are optional in Europe.

Ford isn’t the only automaker facing this issue. The ultra-compact Smart car was sold overseas for nine years, but before Daimler AG could bring it to the U.S., it had to make the car longer to meet U.S. crash standards, spokesman Ken Kettenbeil said.

But Ford’s promise to bring six small, fuel-efficient vehicles from Europe and start building them in North America in 2010 puts a new focus on the challenge of satisfying governments’ varying requirements.

These global models are the cornerstone of Ford’s plan to return to profitability after losing $8.7 billion last quarter. The Dearborn-based automaker says its small European vehicles sell well and are superior to those in the U.S. Ford also plans to save billions from designing products for global sales, boosting profits on small cars, which don’t generate the revenue of trucks and SUVs.

Automakers know how to retrofit their vehicles but question the time and expense involved when the changes may not make those vehicles safer, said Jim Vondale, director of Ford’s safety office.

“It may involve changes to the structure, it may involve changes to material, but they result in not so many differences in the safety levels of the vehicles,” he said.

Ford recently studied 43 regulations in Europe and the U.S. and found that just 11 were equivalent, Vondale said. Fourteen had major differences that would require significant changes. Asian countries’ regulations, which are closer to European requirements than their U.S. counterparts, add even more complexities.

Admittedly, that’s just the equity portfolio. Currency trading continues throughout the day and can theoretically generate limitless gains. But with $1 million in buying power (including the 10:1 leverage available to a currency portfolio with a $100,000 cash balance), one would need to generate a one-day currency gain of roughly 40%, on top of a perfect equity allocation, to achieve the gains ostensibly achieved by all top 10 weekly gainers.

At no point, it seems, did Wojcicki or any of the others she involved in planning Google daycare do a market-rate analysis. They simply built the childcare facilities as they saw fit, and then priced it based on cost, not the going rates even for the kind of quality care they professed to seek.

The Scandinavian School in San Francisco, for example, offers full-time Reggio Emilia daycare for $16,000 a year for infants, and less for toddlers and preschoolers. If the Scandinavian School charged Google’s outsized rates, it would run a nearly 50 percent profit margin. Google, by contrast, is losing money by the fistful on its childcare.

So Google has on its hands a disaster: A disaster for parents, a disaster for children, and a disaster for Google shareholders. How does Google respond?

Not by fixing the problem, but instead by lying to a New York Times columnist. Nocera, a famed reporter, quotes Brin twice. Google PR repeatedly denied that Brin made these comments an unbelievably brazen act, considering the remarks were made before large groups of Google employees. A sampler:

At a T.G.I.F. in June, the Google co-founder Sergey Brin said he had no sympathy for the parents, and that he was tired of “Googlers” who felt entitled to perks like “bottled water and M&Ms,” according to several people in the meeting. (A Google spokesman denies that Mr. Brin made that comment.)

But parents who talked to me said that several times during the six-week-long day care brouhaha, Mr. Brin made comments indicating that he viewed the whole thing as a giant economics experiment. “This is a supply-and-demand issue,” he told one group of parents adding that Google needed to charge what the market would bear. (Through a Google spokesman, Mr. Brin denies making such a statement.) Given that Google has lots of pre-I.P.O. millionaires, it can clearly charge a lot.

Of course, Google PR would deny that Brin made these statements. They are damning; they suggest the founder is out of touch with rank-and-file employees, and callous in his treatment of them. He surely is, but it is unseemly to admit as much.

Wojcicki, with Brin’s permission what an indulgent brother-in-law! is conducting an experiment on her fellow Googlers, and their children. But Googlers did not sign up for this experiment. Any parent knows how difficult it is to find good, affordable childcare, and how wrenching for children it can be to change providers. The real test going on here isn’t some kind of supply-and-demand economics experiment. It’s how arrogant Brin and his clique can get before his employees revolt.

okay, so maybe it’s not extraordinarily cheating, but i feel like i’m cheating since it’s so easy and fun! recall when i told you that i dropped by my friend nancy morgan’s house, and nancy littrel had left this stamp set? this is one of the techniques that nancy showed me… which nancy l. showed her, which i muse on she was taught by the astounding leslie miller. i’ve not in the least been that fine fantastic at watercoloring with reinkers and a con. it seems i can’t appreciate the quickly amount of ink.. either too much or not enough. so, this is why i was thrilled to learn how to do this.. and now i’m in love with my stampin’up! markers… at least with watercolor paper. *wink*.yep, you heard me… i used merely my stampin’ write markers and my aquapainter. am i the last one to know about this? it honestly took answerable to a coup d’oeil, and it was a no brainer. i love no brainers… i need no brainers.i’m active to show you just how easy! you ready? did you pinch this set? if you didn’t, you more wisely hurry…. time’s out at the end of the month. :)watercoloring in place of cheaters:step one:stamp your image on watercolor typescript with stazon ink (or emboss).step two:take your marker with the brush tip and draw on the lines in the archetype that indicate the shadowing. *click on the image to investigate a larger version of the photo.* i colored the stem of the flower with the fine quiddity tip.step three: take the aquapainter (or paint brush) and move the ink from the shadowed areas to the outer areas. blend as much or as little as you insufficiency. if you get an area too dark, just dab the area with a stationery towel. if you shortage more ink, go back again with your brush tip and add more to the shaded areas again.touch the warning of the aquapainter to a tissue or paper towel until the red is unconscious of the tip, then move on to the old olive on the leaves. it’s okay to leave a little milk-white area too.wham bam, shazam, done! omgosh… how casually is that? the more it dries, the more it just pops from the paper. can you believe it? two markers and a aquapainter!things to remember:here is the programme:stamps: bloomin’ spectacular (stampin’up!), pretty petals background kidney.scratch paper: watercolor paper, rose red, old olive, basic black.ink: black stazon, rose red & old olive stampi
